Follow-Up Questions

What is it?

A follow-up is the question that responds to the answer just given — not the next item on the Q sheet, but a deeper probe into what the guest actually said. "You mentioned it nearly failed — what happened in that moment?" Follow-ups are where interviews stop being questionnaires and become conversations; they're the difference between a host reading questions and a host listening.

Practical example

A weak interviewer asks question 4, the guest gives a fascinating answer hinting at a near-disaster, and the interviewer... asks question 5 (the next thing on the sheet) — the gold mine just opened, ignored. A strong interviewer drops the sheet: "Wait — go back. You said you almost lost everything. Tell me about that night." That follow-up — unscripted, born from genuine listening — produces the moment the whole interview gets clipped for. The paradox of follow-ups: the best questions in any interview are usually the ones that weren't prepared, because they prove the host heard the human in front of them and chased what was real.

Key things to know (non-technical)

• Follow-ups require listening over reading: the interviewer who's mentally rehearsing their next scripted question can't hear the opening the guest just gave — presence is the prerequisite skill.
• Good follow-ups can be partly pre-imagined: anticipating likely answers and pre-drafting probes ("if they mention the failure, ask about...") — preparation that enables spontaneity rather than replacing it.
• They're where the memorable, clippable moments live: the surprising admission, the emotional beat, the specific story — almost always come from a follow-up, not a prepared question.
• The tension with the Q sheet is the whole craft: knowing when to chase a thread (follow up) versus when to return to the plan (move on) — both are mistakes if mistimed.
