Limiter / Compressor

What is it?

Two automatic level-tamers that smooth a voice's natural dynamics:

• Compressor: gently narrows the gap between quiet and loud — soft words come up, loud moments come down — producing the even, close, "radio voice" consistency of professional audio.
• Limiter: the hard ceiling at the end of the chain — an absolute "nothing passes this level" wall that catches sudden peaks (the laugh, the shout, the mic bump) before they clip into distortion.

A compressor is cruise control for loudness; a limiter is the airbag.

Practical example

Listen to any radio host or podcast: whether they whisper an aside or laugh out loud, their voice stays in one comfortable loudness lane — that's compression, applied so universally that uncompressed voice now sounds amateur by contrast. The limiter's save is invisible by design: mid-stream, the host's sudden delighted shout would have spiked into crackling distortion — the limiter caught the peak at the ceiling, and the audience heard a loud-but-clean moment. Streamers discovered both via OBS audio filters; broadcasters have had them patched across every channel for half a century.

Key things to know (non-technical)

• The standard chain order for a voice: noise suppression → compressor → limiter — clean it, even it, cap it.
• Compression has a taste dial: light compression = natural and dynamic; heavy = dense "broadcast" punch; too heavy = breathing, pumping artifacts.
• The limiter is non-negotiable on live chains: live voices will spike, and clipped distortion is unfixable — the wall must exist.
• Listeners never name these effects; they just describe the result: "their audio sounds professional." This pair is most of that sentence.
