SRT (Secure Reliable Transport)
SRT (Secure Reliable Transport)
What is it?
SRT is a newer way to send live video to a server, designed for unreliable internet connections. If RTMP is a normal delivery truck, SRT is a truck with shock absorbers and a backup driver: when the road gets bumpy (Wi-Fi drops, mobile network hiccups), the video still arrives smooth and watchable.
Practical example
A reporter is broadcasting live from a crowded stadium using mobile internet. With RTMP, the stream would freeze and pixelate every time the network dips. With SRT, the system quietly re-sends the lost pieces in time, so viewers at home see a clean picture even though the connection at the stadium is shaky.
Key things to know (non-technical)
- Built for bad networks: mobile broadcasting, remote locations, outdoor events.
- Encrypted by default — the "Secure" in the name.
- Lower delay than RTMP in many setups.
- Increasingly offered as a "pro" ingest option by platforms and broadcast tools.
In Tupic Live
Offering SRT ingest would let Tupic Live creators broadcast reliably from phones and outdoor locations — a strong selling point for mobile-first, on-the-go live shows.
