SSAI (Server-Side Ad Insertion)
SSAI (Server-Side Ad Insertion)
What is it?
SSAI is stitching ads directly into the video stream on the server, so the ad and the content arrive as one seamless, unbroken stream to the viewer. The viewer's device receives a single continuous video where the ad is already woven in — indistinguishable, technically, from the content itself. It's the modern backbone of streaming and FAST advertising, prized because it makes ads nearly impossible to block and perfectly smooth to play.
Practical example
On a FAST channel, when the ad break comes, the server has already stitched the ad into the stream — the viewer sees content flow into ad and back to content with no buffering, no loading, no seam. Two viewers watching the same channel can even receive different ads stitched into their personal streams (this is where SSAI enables DAI). The advantage that made it dominant: because the ad is part of the same stream as the content, ad-blockers (which work by blocking separate ad requests) can't tell the ad apart from the show — there's nothing separate to block. And because it's server-stitched, playback is as smooth as the content, avoiding the buffering that client-side ads suffer.
Key things to know (non-technical)
- SSAI's two superpowers: ad-block resistance (the ad is inside the content stream, not a separate blockable request) and smooth playback (server-stitched, no client-side loading/buffering) — which together made it the streaming-ad standard.
- It's the enabler of personalized streaming ads: because the server assembles each stream, it can stitch different ads for different viewers (the foundation DAI builds on).
- It's the opposite approach to CSAI (client-side): server does the work and stitching, versus the player fetching ads separately — the architectural choice with big consequences for blocking and smoothness.
- It's infrastructure-heavy: stitching streams per-viewer at scale is real engineering — which is why it's typically a platform-level capability, not something individual creators build.
In Tupic Live
SSAI is the ad-delivery technology Tupic Live would need for any serious ad-supported (FAST-style) offering: stitching ads seamlessly into creators' streams and channels so they're smooth and unblockable, and enabling per-viewer ad targeting — a platform-level infrastructure investment that, combined with the playout and EPG concepts, is what would let Tupic Live run a real ad-funded channel business rather than just host streams.
